The two big misconceptions about networks are:
1. Good networks arise spontaneously
The problem with this view is that it is essentially passive. ‘Spontaneous’ networks consist of people you are already familiar with. Such a network will almost never have the reach to be useful in broadcasting a new offering or value proposition.
2. The best network is the one with the closest confidants
This network is certainly very important, but numerous studies show that most jobs are found through less strong connections. This is not because friends do not want to help you, but because they usually have the same information as you do. Lesser known acquaintances can build bridges to people and organizations we do not know.
